At WordCamp San Francisco last weekend, Matt Mullenweg made an announcement that has the WordPress community buzzing.
While there was some initial confusion surrounding the announcement this comment by Mullenweg left over at the Blog Herald set the record straight.
WordPress MU, the multi-user platform that allows the creation of several blogs per single install (ala WordPress.com), is going to be merged into the main WordPress framework.
What this means for you, fellow WordPress user, is that you’ll now be able to create several blogs from a single installation of the WordPress code you already have installed.
The move makes sense for several reasons, not the least of which is that many other blogging platforms already offer such a feature. Also, many WordPress users are still unaware of the existence of WordPress MU and others have been too intimidated by the added layer of complexity to give it a shot.
By folding MU into the main WordPress framework, they’ll be opening up a lot of new possibilities for a huge portion of their user base.

Let’s just hope they make it a little easier to use. I tried Mu out and it’s no where as “quick and easy” to install/configure as regular WP and it’s community isn’t quite as responsive either. The lack of support for some plug-ins is also frustrating.
But hey, it’s open and free, so that’s sometimes to be expected.
Hey Marty, thanks for stopping in!
Yeah, I’ve used MU a couple of times and once as an end user. Once it’s set up it’s not bad at all, but it definitely is more time consuming to get set up and configured.
